Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are a hardy perennial herb with a delicate onion flavour, perfect for soups, omelettes and cheese dishes. Their slender leaves add fresh flavour, while vibrant edible purple flowers provide a colourful garnish and help attract pollinators. Easy to grow in pots, window boxes, borders or patios, this low-maintenance, self-fertile plant suits small gardens and raised beds. Start seedlings in compost-filled pots or trays to protect them, then transplant to their final position once established. Harvest in summer (June–September) and snip regularly to encourage fresh, healthy growth and a continuous supply of homegrown chives.
